In support of the republic Republic Act 9512, or the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008, the Department of Environment and National Resources (DENR), through the Environment Management Bureau (EMB), launched the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools to recognize environment-friendly schools that have initiated and integrated into their instruction, research, extension, and /or administration programs which are related in nature.
This 2017, as the Philippines serves as the Chair of the ASEAN’s 50th Anniversary, with the theme, “ Partnering for Change, Engaging the World”, the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools will once again recognize schools and academic institutions in the country, as partners for change, and dynamic allies in promoting environmental sustainability.

Truly blessed with a scenic and panoramic landscape, the Naval State University perfectly embodies an eco-friendly learning environment. The university not only provides quality and relevant training and education to its stakeholders, but it is also one of the leading institutions geared towards environmental sustainability in the Eastern Visayas Region.
There has been a rigid review of the curriculum of programs to ensure that sustainable education was present and integrated. In some programs of the University, subjects such as Watershed Management and Reforestation, Environmental and Natural Science are offered which tackles and advocates for the conservation and protection of the environment.
Aside from such courses, instructors are likewise encouraged to integrate and interrelate environmental issues in their lessons. Students’ projects, outputs, and research should also generate concepts, inventions, innovations, and interventions that could contribute to sustainable development and environmental conservation and protection.
Because of its commitment to promoting an eco-friendly learning environment, the Naval State University is able to live up to its motto, “ Nobility, Solidarity, and Unity”. It was also the Regional Winner in the College Category for Region 8 during the 2015 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools.
The school administration has developed the “ Shoot Your Bottle” where used plastic bottles are disposed of in holders similar to a basketball ring. The Clean As You Go Policy is also implemented throughout the campus.
Air conditioning units are only switched on from 9 am to 5 pm. Lights and fans in offices and classrooms are also switched off when not in use.
Faculty and students of the College of Maritime Education spearhead the Beachurero program, a coastal cleanup activity in which garbage and trash are collected in coastal areas and beaches.
Annual tree planting activities are conducted, with the help of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO). The DENR has also recognized the university for its support of the National Greening Program, especially in the planting of seedlings.
